Library ofMinistry of Health was established in 1984,under National Health Information Project as a sub unit of the Development and Planning Unit of the Ministry of Health. In 1989 this library was shifted to a more spacious premises at the Family Health Bureau. From 1997 onwards the library was absorbed into the administrative purview of Education,Trainning &Research Unit and during this period the Deputy Director General(Education, Training & Research)was Dr. S.A.P.Gnanissara. In 1998,the post of Librarian was created and Mrs.H.P.R.W.Hettiarachchi was appointed as it’s first Librarian.

A Library is an organized collection of sources of information and similar resources, made accessible to a defined community for reference or borrowing. A modern library provides physical and digital access to material.
The concept of the library is not a new concept to the Sri Lankan and the libraries were existing even in early stages of our history, many centuries ago.
The library of Ministry of Health is one of the key centres for information of health related information and knowledge to the wide range of healthcare workers, from it’s inception and it may be considered as an academic library.
It has been rendering it’s services to the several generations of health professionals. Recently we have introduce the E-access and the networking facilities to the key health information centres in the world and increasing activity as an electronic repository for institutional scholarly research and academic knowledge. I am Happy to declare that the Library of Ministry of Health shows the best features of the library services and act as a stimulus for reading.
Of course, We need many more improvement and aiming towards meeting the requirements of all readers. We sincerely hope that this centre of knowledge is used by many more users and your suggestions are well accepted.
